- <p> Rising rock stars seem genetically predisposed to an ugly
- affliction. Clinical name? Swollen Ego. But Eddie Vedder may be
- an exception. At 26, the poet laureate of the wildly successful
- Seattle band PEARL JAM remains refreshingly self-effacing. "I
- wish we weren't on MTV, man. I just feel silly talking about our
- band all the time," says Vedder, a contemplative sort who locked
- himself in a windowless basement to produce the pensive lyrics
- on Pearl Jam's debut album, Ten. Not surprisingly, the songs
- depict a world spinning uncontrollably on an axis of alienation.
- So far, the music has sparked love cries from the Sassy set and
- raves among critics. Last week Ten hit No. 2 on the charts.
- Meanwhile, Vedder, a grungy Adonis, remains astounded by the
- band's popularity boom. "Every day something amazing happens."
